Research Problem
This study attempts to find out the extent of high school library experiences of 522 college freshmen enrolled at the Philippine Women’s University during the school year 1958-1959 in order to determine what should constitute an effective library instruction program for this group of library users.

Methodology
Through a two-part questionnaire and a performance test, it is ascertained how much and how well students use the library resources and facilities, as well as why the students did not utilize these.

Findings and Conclusions
One of the findings is that the students made fairly good use of the dictionary but not the encyclopedia and the card catalog. A fairly high percentage of the group have skill and ability to identify and use the various parts of a book. The most common reason cited for the non-use or poor use of library resources is the students’ unfamiliarity with these due to their unavailability in the high schools and the fact that the students were not taught how to make effective use of the library and its resources.

Recommendations
It is recommended that provisions be made for teaching students the library skills they lack.
